Chortitza Colony Deaths

Recorded in the Diaries of
Jacob Wall (1832-53) and David Epp (1837-43)

Extracted by

What follows are the deaths and funerals recorded in the diaries of Jacob Wall (1807-1860) and David Epp (1781-1843). Wall was a miller in the village of Neuendorf and Epp was a farmer in the village of Chortitza. David Epp was also a minister in the Chortitza Colony church and his diary records some details on the lives of those for whom he conducted funeral services.

I first came across the Epp and Wall diaries in the summer of 1980, while working as a summer student at the Mennonite Heritage Centre under the direction of Lawrence Klippenstein. During that summer I extracted all of the names found in these two diaries, combined this with other data I had gathered on the Chortitza Colony Mennonites and put the information on index cards for Mennonite Genealogy Inc. Since that time I have published the marriages from these diaries in Mennonite Family History (April, 1997).

Recently there have been major genealogical advances by several individuals in sorting out the first few generations of those who lived in the Chortitza Colony. This has resulted in significant additional Chortitza Colony material being added to the GRANDMA database1, numerous new files of early Chortitza Colony genealogical data being posted to the MMHS web page and a major book on the early Chortitza Colony Mennonites2. After having reviewed the most recent (on-line) version of the GRANDMA database (v. 3.08 which contains 519,646 names) and Schapansky's book2. I've come to realize that neither of these resources has used the Epp or Wall diaries. This makes much of the information provided below new and worth the effort of translating from the original diaries. Many of the people whose deaths are recorded here were among the early settlers of the Chortitza Colony and can be found in chapters 12 to 25 of Schapansky's book and in the many MMHS web site postings of Tim Janzen (http://www.mennonitegenealogy.org/russia/mmhsgen4.htm).

Please note that the entries below are not always direct translations. In general I have tried to present, in a fairly compact but readable way, the relevant genealogical data. In many cases more information is available. Those who want to obtain a photocopy of an entire entry should contact the Mennonite Heritage Centre or myself. The entire David Epp diary has been translated by John B. Toews3. Unfortunately this translation contains some transcription errors and omissions.
